I saw it about a week ago. Excellent stuff!
I saw it two nights ago. I thought it was really well produced. I liked the interviews with Richard Dawkins and The Discovery Institute and the documentary helped explain a lot about Intelligent Design.
But. Parts of it were really lame. The whole Nazi thing for instance. Yeah I saw where they were coming from on that but it was ridiculous. Its called fear mongering and if I remember right its a logical fallacy. The dvd is full of it.
Other than that, it was enjoyable.
Barry, glad you liked it—or most of it. I was curious, what specifically was lame or ridiculous about the Nazi connection?
The argument was not that Darwinian evolution necessarily leads to genocide. Only that it was a necessary condition for the holocaust in Nazi Germany.
I think it was a rhetorically powerful way to bring home the point that ideas have consequences. They are not and never will be neutral. So I don’t think this is fear mongering. It might be a reductio ad absurdum though against the evolutionary position from an ethical point of view.
As far as the documentation of the historical connection between Darwin and Hitler (and don’t forget Friedrich Nietzsche’s contribution as well), see "From Darwin to Hitler: Evolutionary Ethics, Eugenics, and Racism in Germany” by Richard Weikart. It is a rigorous study of this issue. One may disagree at the end of the day, but I don’t think it is illegitimate to point out the connection.
So I must respectfully disagree with your critique.
Well I know about the whole Social Darwinism thing. I understand that. Sure there are links to it with Hitler. And there are links to it with Margaret Sanger's Planned Parenthood. But you can still state facts and be generating fear in people's minds. I'm not necessarily disagreeing with the facts they brought up just the way they said them.
Its like evolution is this great evil beast and intelligent design is the hero that is going to bring it down. While the theory of evolution might lead people to do terrible things, that isn't necessarily the norm.
Isn't it possible that the examples brought up in the movie are exceptions?
