Why do we exist?

"To relish and rejoice in the beauty of God alone accounts for why we exist. Enjoying God is the soul's sole satisfaction, with which no rival pleasure can hope to compete. Glorifying God by enjoying him forever. It's the Christian Theory of Everything."-Sam Storms

"These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full."--Jesus (cf. John 15:11)

Trying to explain this to someone who has never experienced the true joy of knowing and loving God is very difficult. It is like trying to describe a fillet Mignon steak to someone who has never eaten one. But that is what we try to do. We invite those who don't know God to taste and see. Much of Christian understanding is preceded by experience (though both are necessary for the knowledge of God).

So how do you explain someone like me? I dance, laugh, sing, coach soccer, love my wife and family with every atom in my body. I occasionally do bad things that I am very sorry for. I occasionally do some very good things.

But I don't believe in an omnipotent man who lives in the sky. After nearly a half century of trying, I derive absolutely no pleasure in "rejoicing in god."

Why do we exist? Why does there have to be a "why"? Why not be content with the fact that - of all the disorganized atoms in the universe - the atoms making up "Jonathan" organized themselves enough to allow you to propogate your genes into the next generation.

Douglas Adams (one of my favorite authors) put it succinctly: "Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?"
