There is no reason to believe that a humanist approach would not achieve the same )if not much better) results.
Humanism is a "religion" (one I try to adhere to - but often fall short) but is based on reality using the foundation of science and reason.
Sure, those people certainly might need something to believe in. Why not a "belief" in reality? A quest to understand the secrets of the universe using empiricism and reason? A moral foundation based on reality instead of a myth of stone tablets brought from the top of a mountain?
Do you see your atheism as a core element of your religion of humanism?
Well, perhaps but that depends on the context.
I suppose one could be a deist and a humanist so atheism is not a core component of humanism but, yes, I would wager that most humanists are atheist, too.
