Article: "As an atheist, I truly believe Africa needs God"

I came across an interesting article in the Times Online. Worth a read - As an atheist, I truly believe Africa needs God.

For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring. Carl Sagan

There is no reason to believe that a humanist approach would not achieve the same )if not much better) results.

Humanism is a "religion" (one I try to adhere to - but often fall short) but is based on reality using the foundation of science and reason.

Sure, those people certainly might need something to believe in. Why not a "belief" in reality? A quest to understand the secrets of the universe using empiricism and reason? A moral foundation based on reality instead of a myth of stone tablets brought from the top of a mountain?

Do you see your atheism as a core element of your religion of humanism?

Well, perhaps but that depends on the context.

I suppose one could be a deist and a humanist so atheism is not a core component of humanism but, yes, I would wager that most humanists are atheist, too.
