Why did someone have to invent the Sundial?

Ok....I am preparing a message on Time. And I am now much more aware than ever why I do not like watches...or their predecessor...sun dials. I am not alone! I was amused when I came across what Plautus, a Roman Playwright in 200 B.C., said:

The gods confound the man who first found out
How to distinguish hours! Confound Him, too,

Who in this place set up a sun-dial,
To cut and hack my days so wretchedly,
Into small portions.

Preach it, brother...
